Translator's Comment:
From the chapter’s title, 阙 are free-standing ceremonial gate towers that form a gateway in front of temples, palaces, or royal tombs. A que tower contains a high platform with an observation tower. They usually come in pairs and have no other building or structure between them, leaving a gap, hence the name. These are not the same as city gate towers (城楼) that are situated above the gates of a city for defensive purposes.
This is one of my favorite novels among Fei Tian Ye Xiang’s historical works, and I hope this teaser will bring interest and awareness of this masterpiece to a wider audience. If anyone read the first version of chapter 1, there have been some slight touch ups, mostly to footnotes. I recommend checking out the Background, Glossary, Characters, and World Map to help you better understand the setting.
